In an electric four-hour solo performance on live television, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has given one of the strongest signals yet that he may run again for the presidency in 2012.
Vladimir Putin, Russian Prime Minister, said, "I will think about it. There is enough time. Each of us should perform his duties and work effectively in their current positions. Depending on the development of the situation in the economy and the social sphere, corresponding decisions will be taken regarding the election campaign of the year 2012."
Putin also added that he wants to focus now on his job as prime minister and make sometimes unpopular decisions without having to take electoral considerations into account.
Putin had to shift into the premier's seat in 2008 following two consecutive terms in office. But since then the presidency term has been extended to six years and Putin is eligible to run again in 2012.
Analysts say no one could miss Putin's desire to reclaim the presidency. The current Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who is now visiting Italy, says he may also stand again.
