Principals at 39 high schools can recommend students for next year's Peking University freshman class.
The students will have a face-to-face interview with the university officials. A successful interview means 30 extra points on the national college entrance exam. Peking University has its own exam for any other student who wants an interview.
Qin Chunhua, Chief of PKU Admissions Office, said, "All students who perform well in high school and have well-developed all-round abilities are qualified for recommendation."
The Second Affiliated High School of Beijing Normal University has also determined its recommendation list, and canvassed opinions from the whole school.
A senior student of Beijing Normal University 2nd Affiliated HS, said, "We are all convinced by the recommendations. The three students are the best in studies and other activities. They are versatile."
So far, all the chosen students are all well-rounded, high academic achievers.
But the principal of Beijing Number 4 High School, who can recommend five students, has a different standard.
Liu Changming, Principal of Beijing No. 4 High School, said, "The schools should recommend students with specialized talent. If we don't have such students, I'd rather not recommend anyone."
Nearly 80 universities are authorized to enroll outstanding high school seniors by awarding them bonus points on the national college entrance exam. Peking University is the only one using the recommendation method.
