While Fulong is heading home, many pandas remain overseas. 23 of these black-and-white creatures were sent as state gifts to nine countries from 1953 to 1982.

In 1972, US President Richard Nixon paid a state visit to China. The Chinese government sent Lingling and Xingxing to the US. When they arrived at the National Zoo in Washington, 8-thousand people braved the rain to greet them.

In the 1990s, the Chinese government reached an agreement with the international Wildlife conservation agency to loan pandas to other countries for scientific research. Though these pandas and their offspring remain the property of China, the joy they have brought to people around the globe is boundless.
