The countdown has started for the National Day celebration. And soldiers who will march in the parade formations are training day and night to achieve perfection. One of the formations, however, is not made of professional soldiers, but rather people coming from all walks of life.
These soldiers are from the reserve army. As one of China's most important forces to deal with unexpected events and emergency situations, they stand ready to reinforce regular forces of the People's Liberation Army in time of war.
And these are Type 81 assault rifles, displaying fixed bayonets. They are standard issue for reservists. In fact, the reserve army formation is the only formation in the whole parade carrying this type of rifle.
The reserve army soldiers are civilians coming from all walks of life. When a situation arises, they would be quickly mobilized.
-- What is your job, and why you're here?
"I am a security officer at Beijing Capital Airport. I am here to train my body and mind."
"I am a medical worker. I come here to honor my duty."
"I am a private business owner. I am here to enrich my life and to contribute to the motherland on her 60th birthday."
"I am a taxi driver. I have come to do things worth remembering."
And these people haven't walked out of the training ground since they arrived.
-- How far do you live from the training ground?
"About five kilometers."
-- Any family members came and visited you?
"None."
-- Not even at the gate?
"No."
-- So you can only call them?
"Only talk on the phone."
-- Any news from home?
"My wife gave birth to a pair of twins."
-- Really?
"Yes, both are boys."
-- Did you get to see them?
"No, but I saw the pictures."
-- Did your wife complain?
"No. However, she was not happy about me coming here. Guess she'll get over it later."
-- How are you planning to make it up to her?
"Treat her real nice."
Fortunately, with less than three days left, he and his family won't have to wait for long before they can meet again.
