The record for the most number of seats filled at London's Wembley Stadium was broken on Friday by U2. U2's mammoth '360' tour drew in a record-breaking 88-thousand fans. The previous record of 83-thousand fans was set by the Foo Fighters in 2008. Employing ideas from their "Vertigo" tour, which allowed band members to be seen by an entire stadium -- rather than just three sides -- the design and production team had a much tougher challenge this time around.
The Irish rockers were perched on a four-legged steel structure that enabled the audience to see the band from all four corners of the venue.
Designer Willie Williams and architect Mark Fischer came up with the idea to create a structure that resembled a giant claw or spider. They say it was inspired by Los Angeles International Airport.
"The Claw" - as its dubbed by designers - comes in three parts. The first part covers the entire pitch with a flooring, which enables them to drive cranes and trucks onto the field. The second part is a steel structure that takes four days to set up.
