Typhoon Morakot has left six people dead and three missing on the Chinese mainland. The storm hit eastern coastal provinces on Sunday.
Morakot weakened to a tropical storm early on Monday. But it has caused heavy flooding and serious damage along its path in East China.
Four deaths were reported in Zhejiang Province and one each in Fujian Province and Jiangxi Province. Two people in Zhejiang and another in Fujian are missing.
More than 8.8 million people have been affected in Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi and Anhui Provinces. And 1.4 million have been relocated. Direct losses are estimated at 1.3 billion US dollars.
The Zhejiang Meteorological Station announced on Monday that Morakot was slowing and weakening as it moved northwestward, bringing heavy rain to northern Zhejiang.
Morakot is expected to leave Zhejiang and move into the neighboring Jiangsu Province, bringing heavy rainfall to Jiangsu and Shanghai on Tuesday.
