Staying with pop music for now one of the most popular elements of the 2009 CCTV Spring Gala, was the performance of "Super Band". It was a temporary project involving four of the biggest Mandopop and Cantopop stars of the 80s and 90s: Jonathan Lee, Wakin Chou, A-Yue and Lo Ta Yu. In today's "Spotlight", we'll take a look at how these musical heavyweights came together.
"Super Band" made a spectacular entrance into the pop scene last year. Press conferences were held in both Beijing and Taipei to announce the band's formation.
The four members include veteran composer Jonathan Lee, the god father of Chinese pop, Lo Ta Yu, pop sensation Wakin Chou, and singer and songwriter, A-Yue. Together, they not only have a group with the oldest average age of any Chinese pop band, but they also have unparalleled influence over the country's music scene.
Singer Lo Ta Yu said, "We all have been in the pop world for a long time. Each of us used to be really popular at different times. Now, it's time for us to start afresh. We want to prove that we are working hard all the time. "
Lo said the idea for the band came during a dinner, but it took three years before they finally realized it. With their own specialities, the four members represent different musical styles that have taken on the pop scene for the past thirty years.
