The UN Security Council began a special meeting on Saturday night, after Israel launched its ground operation in Gaza.
Council diplomats said the 15 members would debate a statement drafted by Libya, that would express serious concern at the escalation of the situation in Gaza.
The statement also called on all parties to observe an immediate cease-fire and stop all military activities immediately.
Outside the meeting, UN General Assembly President and Palestine's ambassador to the UN also urged the Security Council to take immediate action to stop the violence.
