The eastern city of Nanjing has been awarded this year's Habitat Scroll of Honor.

Nanjing resident Zheng Qingyu said, "When I was young we could wash vegetables and rice in the Qinhuai River, but then it gradually turned worse. The worst times were in the 1990s. The whole river stunk. "
The city spent years cleaning up decades of pollution in the river. It's now a green river with beautiful scenery along its banks.
Zheng Qingyu said, "I am so happy that there are all parks along the Qinhuai River now. All the shabby houses are gone."
Now, the Qinhuai River and the scenic spots along it are the center of Nanjing's tourism. The River used to inspire ancient Chinese writers and poets. It is now the city's biggest attraction.
Prof. Lin Binyao of Nanjing University said, "I think the U.N. wants to set Nanjing as an example of balancing fast development with a comfortable living environment. I think the award is a big encouragement for our city."
The U.N. Habitat Award was created in 1989 to encourage achievements in developing comfortable and harmonious living.
Chinese cities and experts have won 16 prizes at these Awards in the past.
