To welcome the travelers, Israeli tourism authorities threw a small party. But some of the travelers were unaware that their trip was of such historical importance.
One Chinese tourist said "We didn't know until a few days ago that we were the first group to visit the country. We are very gratified with the welcome shown by Israeli authorities."
Israeli Tourism Official said "We are very excited about the Chinese tourists coming to Israel. This will be a very good opportunity for Israel. We have prepared for the moment for quite a while, and every signal detail has all been considered. I believe the Chinese tourists will be satisfied with their trip."
China granted Israel approved destination status in 2005, though it took years for the two countries to work through all the details.
The number of Chinese visitors to the Middle East has grown dramatically over the years. A little more than 4000 Chinese people visited Israel independently back in 1995. That number grew to 18,000 in 2007. Officials have promised more convenient flights between the two countries in the future.
