Phelps once took part in 21 swimming events within three days when he was 13. Bowman also got him trained underwater with his sports shoes on.

Setbacks were one trick Bowman often resorted to in his training program. Swimming goggles were not allowed once when Phelps was in the competition. The coach says he wanted Phelps to understand that nothing is always perfect.

Bowman has given Phelps time off until February the 1st. After that they will begin training for the 2009 World Championships in Rome.
