France''s President Nicolas Sarkozy (C) meets Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas (L) and Israel''s Prime Minister Ehud Olmert (R) as they arrive at the Elysee Palace, July 13, 2008.

Mahmoud Abbas, said, "We know that we are committed to the roadmap and the international resolutions adopted by the United Nations. Therefore, we have no alternative but to achieve this peace: for the sake of our people, the Palestinian and Israeli peoples, the peoples of the Mideast and for the people of the world. Because we know that peace in the Mideast is the basis of peace in the world."

Sarkozy has already enjoyed some diplomatic success on the sidelines of the summit. The French president announced on Saturday an agreement between Lebanon and Syria to open embassies in each other's capitals for the first time. He said, "The Union of the Mediterranean offers a chance, like we did on Saturday with Syria and Lebanon, to talk about the most complex and difficult problems because the Union is about peace, and peace is something that must come between Israel and the Palestinians."

Sarkozy added that France and the EU will do everything possible to contribute to peace and promote mutual trust in the Mideast.
