Sun Moon Lake

"If it is raining, Sun Moon Lake is veiled in mist." So reads the description of the Sun Moon Lake in textbooks used by the mainland's elementary schools, part of the beautiful picture depicted for mainlanders.

The pearl of Central Taiwan, Sun Moon Lake is situated to the north of Ali Mountain and to the south of Nenggao Mountain, Nantou County. Wrapped by a shoreline perimeter of 35 kilometers, and comprising a surface area of 900 hectares, Sun Moon Lake is 30 meters in average depth. Taiwan's largest natural fresh water lake, the northeastern area is round like the sun, while the southwestern area is shaped like a crescent moon — hence the name.

Nestled within a tranquil cradle of green mountains, on a sunny day the lake dances and sparkles in the light. And when the mist rolls in from the surrounding peaks, the area's dazzling beauty melts away to form an alluringly mysterious scene. In all weather and all seasons, one will find here an enchanting sight to behold.
