Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region will establish an integrity management system across all regional food enterprises within the next two years in a bid to ensure food safety, according to the province's Economy and Information Committee.
The region's food industry has witnessed rapid growth recently. In 2011, the region's major food companies, all of which generated in excess of 20 million yuan (US$3.2 million) in annual main business income, have registered 12.4 billion yuan revenue from their main business.
However, Ningxia' food industry lacks an integrity system due to the fact that companies are scattered throughout the region, making implementation difficult. This is compounded by the fact that companies' responsibilities are unclear with regard to food safety.
In 2011, the provincial government commenced implementation of the integrity system in 30 selected companies involved in the production of dairy products, meat, wine and soft drinks.
