This fall, primary school students in impoverished areas in the southern parts of Ningxia Hui Autonomous region will be better connected to the outside world. Due to the "Green Computers for the Wild West" campaign, sponsored by the Ministry of Education and other government agencies, primary schools in the region will receive 3,000 computers at the beginning of the school year. Laotang Primary School of Guanzhuang Town already received 5 computers this year as a result of the campaign. "These computers will help the local pupils longing to learn about the outside world keep up with the pace of the era," said Zhang Shengwei, vice director of the town's education commission. Around 9,000 computers have been donated to Ningxia schools since the project's founding in 2009. All the computers are installed with internet filtering software and thus tagged "green computers." Thus far, Ningxia has established internet access in 496 middle and primary schools as well as 418 towns and communities.
