The French-based brand Moet Hennessy has launched a project to make quality sparkling wine in northwest China's Ningxia Hui autonomous region.

A winery of a 1,000 mu (about 67 hectares) of grapes will be established in the eastern foot of Helan Mountain in Ningxia by the Moet Hennessy - Louis Vuitton (LVMH) Group and Ningxia Reclamation Group, said Chang Limin, deputy director of the regional reclamation bureau and deputy general manager of the reclamation group, on Tuesday.

Another 1,700 mu of grapes will be planted by the reclamation group independently to meet the needs of the winery, Chang said.

The group now boasts 100,000 mu of grape planting base, the country's largest, according to Chang.

Moet Hennessy wants to turn west China into a world-class well-known place for grape production and processing to meet the growing demand for sparkling wine in China and Asia generally, said Chris Kostov Navarre, president of LVMH Group.
