Four villages and towns have been hit by floods in Tongxin county in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

At least 280 houses have been destroyed leaving more than 1,000 people homeless. Herds of animals were wiped out in the floods. So far, there have been no reports of any casualties.

Armed police and firefighters are helping residents to salvage what's left of their property.
