Located north of Tai’an City, Shandong Province, Mount Taishan is a mountain of historical and cultural significance. It is the first among China’s 'Five Sacred Mountains'; the other four are Mount Huashan in Shaanxi, Mount Hengshan in Shanxi, Mount Songshan in Henan and Mount Hengshan in Hunan.
Mount Taishan, with its main peak rising 1,545 meters above sea level, has, since ancient times, been a mountain held in high esteem by the Chinese people. It is considered a holy mountain because it faces to the east, the direction from which the sun rises.
According to historical records, Mount Taishan became a sacred place frequented by emperors to offer sacrifices and meditate over 1,000 years before the Christian era. A total of 72 emperors have reportedly visited the mountain.
The mountain has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
