Nanjing University is celebrated as one of oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning in China.

What sets its acceptance letter apart is that it contains elements of classical Chinese poetry of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), a period which produced many famous poets. The poem is written in a style frequently used in the Song Dynasty, which has a fixed number of lines and words. The acceptance letter poem is attributed to Cheng Zhangcan, a professor from the university's Chinese Studies Department. The poem expresses greetings and congratulates accepted students. With this letter, the university emphasizes that it is deep-rooted in traditional culture.
