Chinese pair Yan Zi and Peng Shuai are still on track to win the
title at Wimbledon by getting through to the last sixteen of the
women's doubles
The newly-combined Yan and Peng quickly found their form in the
game against Greek Eleni Daniilidou and German Jasmin Woehr,
although the duo is clearly still trying to find their feet
together.
Breaking the second game gave the Chinese a 2-0 lead and a
strong performance made the first set quickly fall to Yan and Peng,
6-0. It looked like it would be a whitewash early in the second as
they cruised to a 4-0 lead but their opponents fought back
doughtily in the fifth game, staging a mini-comeback to 5-3 before
Yan and Peng put the game away, 6-0, 6-3. In the quarter-finals, a
Chinese Taipei duet will seek to end their march to the title.
In the women's singles, Czech teenager Nicole Vaidisova proved
that she was to be reckoned with by sending defending champion
Amelie Mauresmo crashing out of the tournament.
Vaidisova won their rain-interrupted fourth round clash 7-6
(8/6), 4-6, 6-1 to reach her first All England Club quarter-final
after her appearance in the semi-finals at the Australian Open and
last eight at the French Open this year.
