One World Sports has announced it has acquired exclusive rights to broadcast the Chinese Football Association Super League (CSL) in North America.
One World Sports, a subsidiary of One Media Corp, is an international sports broadcaster with a focus on Asia. Its acquisition of the CSL broadcast rights follows similar recent deals for the Korean K-League, the Japanese J. League, and the Asian Football Confederation Champions League.
According to the agreement with the CSL, One World Sports will carry weekly games on television, broadband and mobile. Details of the value and duration of the agreement are yet to emerge.
"The two sides are dealing with some details in the agreement. The deal will be done in the next few days," a source familiar with the situation revealed.
One World Sports apparently rates the CSL highly.
"We are pleased to have One World Sports providing live coverage of China's top professional matches," said Mark Hardess, president of World Sport Group in ASEAN and Australia. "The Chinese Super League rights secures our dominant and exclusive position in delivering the three best soccer leagues in Asia to US audiences."
But while viewers in North America will soon be able to watch the CSL, the competition is being shunned by some domestic broadcasters. State-owned China Central Television dropped coverage of the CSL in 2008 because of corruption scandals and Chinese soccer's poor overall image.
