Regional-level tennis championship kicks off in Myanmar

The 48th regional-and state-level tennis championships kicked off at the Theinphyu Tennis Court here Friday , aimed at improving the standard of the country's tennis sports.

Organized by the Tennis Federation of Myanmar (TFM), the week-long tournament, will run until next Thursday, the federation director U Maung Maung Lay told Xinhua.

15 male and 9 female teams from regions and states in the country competed in singles and double matches.

Meanwhile, Myanmar hosted the international tennis championship involving 13 countries for the third time at the same venue in Yangon last month.

"Myanmar tennis sports is making progress in the country and our guys comprising junior and senior players can reach the advanced level. Holding the competitions in the country will be a great test for our team", the director said.

Nilar Win, Myanmar tennis player, has grabbed four gold medals and won the chance of taking part in the Asian Asian Championship Group (1) to be held in Indonesia in March this year, he also disclosed.

In 2009, under-14 boy team of Myanmar won first in the year's World Junior Tennis Competition Asia/Oceania pre-qualifying tournament held in Yangon.

Myanmar hosted such tournament in January 2004 and 2006.
