Defending champion Roger Federer on Sunday claimed victory over Spanish Tommy Robredo in fourth round of Australian Open.
The second seed Swiss, beat Robredo 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals for 27 consecutive majors since his third-round exit at the 2004 French Open, equaling Connors Open era record.
Of his 26 previous quarter-final appearances, Federer has converted 24 into semifinals, gone on to reach 20 finals and won 14 of them.
Federer, a 16-time Grand Slam winner, had won the last nine of the 10 encounters with Robredo. On Sunday, Federer racked up 40 unforced errors and 50 winners in the 145-minute game.
"It was a tough match and I'm really happy to be in the next round," Federer told reporters in Melbourne after the match. "I'm sweating bullets out here so I'm really delighted to win this match."
In the quarter-final, he will play either eighth seed Andy Roddick or his Swiss Olympic teammate Stanislas Warwinka.
