Tennis derived from France dated in the 12 - 13 century. It was a game among monasteries, and then it spread to the other European countries and America and developed to the modern sport tennis. Since the 1st Olympics 1896, tennis is one of the eight official sports; however, it was dropped from the Olympic program after 1924, and it didn't return as a medal sport until 1988. Tennis acted as a medal sport in 1958 the 3rd Tokyo Asian Games.

Tennis is played on a rectangular flat surface, usually of grass, clay, and concrete (hard court). The court shall be 78 feet (23.77m) long and, for singles matches, 8.23m wide. For doubles matches, the court shall be 10.97m wide.

Except in some men's singles, all the other matches are played three sets (the one wins two sets wins the match), while some men's singles played five sets (the one wins three sets win the match); A player/team needs to win two consecutive points immediately after "Deuce" to win the "Game". During a tie-break game, points are scored "Zero","1", "2", "3", etc. The first player/team to win seven points wins the "Game" and "Set", provided there is a margin of two points over the opponent(s). If necessary, the tie-break game shall continue until this margin is achieved. The first player/team to win six games wins that "Set", provided there is a margin of two games over the opponent(s). If the score reaches six games all, a tie-break game shall be played. A match can be played to the best of three sets (a player/team needs to win two sets to win the match) or to the best of five sets (a player/team needs to win three sets to win the match) games all, a tie-break game shall be played. A match can be played to the best of 3 sets (a player/team needs to win 2 sets to win the match) or to the best of 5 sets (a player/team needs to win 3 sets to win the match).

Soft Tennis

In the late 19th century, tennis was brought to Japan by a western churchman and this sport was modified according to Asian people's characteristic and was gradually developed. Later this type of sport was named as soft tennis. Soft tennis is a non-Olympic discipline; it became a demonstration event in the 11th Beijing Asian Games, and in the 12th Asian Games in Hiroshima it was contested as a medal sport.

The court of soft tennis is the same as tennis, made of sand land or asphalt-plastic. The racket is made of wood or graphite, lighter than tennis racket. The match can be held both in indoor and outdoor. The court for outdoor is usually clay or man-made grass, while for indoor is wood. The match adopts seven games for singles and 9 games for doubles; the one who wins four games first wins the match. If deuce happens at the end of the 6th or 8th game, then tie-break game will involve. The one who wins the 7th or the 9th game wins the whole match.
