Fencing Fencing
Fencing prevailed in ancient Egypt, China, Greece, Rome and the Arabic countries. It became the official competition sport in the 7th Asian Games in 1974, Tehran, Iran. The scoring system is the detector with wireless frequency, instead of the electric scoring for half century's long. Fencing sport is a combat sport between two fencers. Only the end of the blade touching the opponent's target area can the fencer score a point. The one with more points wins. Fencing consists of three events: Foil, Épée and Sabre. The target area and the rules for each event are different. Foil Foil is a thrusting weapon only. Valid hit could be made with the point and with the point only. The valid target is confined to the trunk excluding the limbs and head. Valid target of foil should be parts covered with metallic jacket so that scoring machine could distinguish valid hit from no-valid hit. The rule of right-of-way applies in foil fencing. The offending side that attacks first and hits valid target could score. The offended side must make valid parry first and then attacking and hitting valid target could score. If both sides start attacks at the same time and hit valid targets of their opponents, neither sides could score. Sabre Sabre is a weapon for cutting and thrusting. Scores are mainly cutting hits in competitions. Valid target comprise supper trunk, mask and arms. Valid targets are covered by a metallic jacket so that electric apparatus could distinguish valid and non-valid hits. The rule of right-of-way also applies in saber fencing. The offending side that attacks first and hits valid target could score. The offended side must make valid parry first and then could score by attacking and hitting a valid target. If both sides start attacks at the same time and hit valid targets of opponents, neither sides could score. Saber has the fastest speed in the three weapons with the shortest time in competitions. Épée Épée is also a thrusting weapon only. Valid hits could only be made with the point and not the edge of the blade. Valid targets include the whole of blade. Valid target include the whole of the fencer's body (trunk, limbs and mask). Epee with a harder blade is heavier than foil. Different from foil and saber, every hit in epee fencing counts as valid. If both sides hit each other in 40ms interval, both sides could score with the scoring machine showing a red and a green signal simultaneously. For an over 50ms interval, the apparatus would only show one hitting signal (red or green). Fencing competition is divided into individual and team competition. Individual competition uses round of eliminating pools and direct elimination system; team competition uses direct elimination system. In team competitions, each team consists of four members (three fencers and a reserve). Each bout of the total nine relay matches is three minutes and consists of five hits. The team that has scored 45 hits first is declared the winner. |
