The Brazilian Confederation of Basketball (CBB) decided on Friday to release the head coach of the women's national team, Carlos Colinas.
Colinas, a Spanish native, was let go for not being able to fully dedicate his time to the Brazilian national team.
The director of women's basketball at the CBB, former star guard Hortencia, announced the decision to fire Colinas. Hortencia cited the fact that Colinas does not currently live in Brazil as the major obstacle to his permanence at the position.
During his nine months as head coach, Colinas led Brazil to finish 9th in the 2010 World Championships in the Czech Republic.
Colinas claims to have family problems that prohibit him from leaving his native Spain. Unable to attend the desires and projects that Hortencia has for the women's team, she decided to search elsewhere.
A potential choice to replace Colinas is recently retired guard Janeth. Having played for the Brazilian national team as well as participating in the Women's National Basketball Association, the WNBA, leading her Houston Comets to win four straight WNBA titles between 1997 and 2000.
Hortencia and the CBB hope to fill Colinas' position quickly in time to reorganize the group and focus on qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
