New Jersey Nets players and coaches visited Zhongguancun No 3 Elementary School on Tuesday as part of the NBA Cares program to show their support for education, youth and family development and health-related causes in communities.
Through NBA Cares, the NBA, its teams and players are committed to donating $100 million to charity, providing a million hours of hands-on service to communities and creating more than 250 places where children and families can live, learn and play throughout the world.
"We are excited and honored to be a part of NBA Cares and help these kids," said Nets coach Avery Johnson. "It's my first time in China and it is great to see we have so many fans in China. You go around China and see so many courts. So many young people play basketball. I look forward to our games in China."
In China, NBA Cares works with nationally and internationally recognized organizations that support education, youth and family development, and health-related causes, including: the China Charity Federation (CCF), the China Youth Development Foundation, the Special Olympics and UNICEF. Since 2004, the NBA Cares program has hosted or been a part of more than 60 community outreach initiatives in China, ranging from education to health and wellness as well as grassroots basketball efforts. As part of the three-year Sichuan earthquake reconstruction plan in partnership with the CCF, the NBA Cares program is committed to building learning and playing areas.
