World No. 2 Roger Federer has confirmed his participation for the 2010 Shanghai Rolex Masters which will also include top 44 ranked players.
Current world No. 43 Lu Yen-Hsun from Chinese Taipei will become the first Chinese to automatically qualify for the only Masters series event in Asia, which will be staged at the Qizhong Tennis Center from October 9 to 17.
Michael Luevano, co-tournament director, said yesterday that all the top names in the sport, including world No. 1 Rafael Nadal of Spain, Serbia's Novak Djokovic, Britain's Andy Murray and defending champion Nikolay Davydenko of Russia will battle it out for Asia's top prize.
Juan Martin del Potro, the surprise winner of 2009 US Open, may also make the trip to Shanghai, Luevano said.
The Argentine, who has struggled with injuries this season and did not defend his title at the ongoing grand slam in New York, is scheduled to compete at a Tokyo event just before the Masters.
Luevano also added that Federer would arrive in Shanghai with a 10-member team, including his new coach, trainer, wife, twin daughters and nannies.
Most of the wildcards for the Masters event will be reserved for Chinese players, with a challenge open - Road to Shanghai Rolex Masters - scheduled to be held from September 25 to October 3.
The organizers said that the draw for the main event will be held on October 9.
Last year, the Shanghai Masters 1000 was voted as the tournament of the year.
