Santos beat Sao Paulo 1-0 at home on Sunday in the 11th round of the Brazilian Championship.
Sao Paulo's defense scored a goal into their own net, giving Santos a 1-0 victory while Sao Paulo remains winless since the tournament returned to action after the World Cup in South Africa.
"When things aren't going your way, the ball ends up in the back of your own net," lamented the game's only goal scorer Renato Silva.
Silva attempted to redirect a Marquinhos direct kick in the 60th minute. The ball deflected off the back of his right foot and ended up blowing past Sao Paulo goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni.
Both teams played cautiously and with a mixed team of starters and reserve players. The reason for the precaution is the teams' upcoming games in the middle of the week.
On July 28, Sao Paulo will travel to face Internacional in the first leg of the semifinals of the Libertadores Cup. On the same day, Santos will host Vitoria in the first leg of the finals of the Brazilian Cup.
Sao Paulo's loss was their third since play resumed. They tied Gremio Prudente in the 10th round and remain winless since July 15. Sunday's result drops them to 15th place with 12 points. Santos improved to eighth place with 15 points.
