Despite being replaced by Rafael Nadal at the top of the world rankings, Swiss Roger Federer received the number one seeding at the Wimbledon Championships due to a better grass-court record.
According to the Wimbledon referee office, the men's singles seeds are the top 32 players on the ATP World Rankings, but then rearranged on a surface-based system. Based on the world rankings at June 14, 2010, 100 percent points earned for all grass court tournaments in the past 12 month and 75 percent points earned for best grass court tournament in the 12 months before were added to decide the seeding order.
Therefore, six-time Wimbledon champion Federer received the number one seeding while Spaniard Nadal, who gave up to defend his Wimbledon title last year due to a knee injury, was seeded second.
The third to eighth seeds are Novak Djokovic from Serbia, Andy Murray from Britain, Andy Roddick from the United States, Robin Soderling from Sweden, Nikolay Davydenko from Russia and Fernando Verdasco from Spain.
Meanwhile, the women's singles seeding order just follows the WTA singles ranking list with Williams sisters being the top two seeds.
Because of the withdrawal of world number five Elena Dementieva due to a calf injury, newly crowned French Open champion Francesca Schiavone took the fifth seeding.
China's top female player Li Na received the number nine seeding.
The grass-court Grand Slam starts on June 21with the draw on Friday.
