Robert O'Ryan, who was convicted Friday in a non-jury trial of stalking Olympic gymnastics champion Shawn Johnson last year, was found guilty but also legally insane.

Johnson, 18, won a gold medal for the balance beam and a silver medal in the individual all-around competition at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The 36-year-old O'Ryan had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity and waived his right to a jury trial when he appeared Monday before Los Angeles Superior Court to face felony charges of stalking and commercial burglary and misdemeanor counts of carrying a loaded firearm in a city.

After four days of testimony, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor found O'Ryan guilty of the charges but also legally insane. He scheduled a new hearing for July 13, once the county Department of Mental Health completes its evaluation of O'Ryan.

O'Ryan could face an indeterminate stint in a state mental hospital if he is found insane.

O'Ryan was arrested in March last year trying to scale a fence at television studios in Los Angeles where Johnson was participating in the popular televised talent contest "Dancing With the Stars".
