Nepali crowned at high altitude marathon

Nepali home runners have bagged all medals of high altitude marathon men's race on Saturday.

Phurba Tamang, 22 years old, defended the title of Tenzing-Hillary Marathon, conquering the 42.195km course within 3 hours 41 minutes and 20 seconds.

Sudip Kulung Rai was the 2nd after 4 hours 2 minutes and 35 seconds, while Sameer Tamang came the third on 4 hours 5 minutes and 10 seconds, according to the organizers.

The other two categories, women's and foreigners' category is yet to be completed.

Tenzing-Hillary Marathon started Saturday morning from Gorak Shep (5,184 meters above sea level), close to Qomolangma Base Camp in Nepal.

The finish line is at the Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar (3,446 meters) and the course is over rough mountain trails fulfilling the Olympic standard.

Tenzing Hillary Marathon is being organized under the aegis of Adventure Sports Tourism Society which is an umbrella organization for all adventure sports activities being held in Nepal.

Organizers have claimed that altogether there are 135 runners including 37 international participants.
