Britain's new Sports and Olympics minister Hugh Robertson has required a 27 million pounds (39 million dollars) cut on London 2012 organisers from their budget on Monday.

But Robertson insisted the cuts could be made without " imperilling" London's ability to deliver a successful Olympic Games.

"We have the worst economic crisis faced by any incoming government in recent times and we are trying to achieve a balance, " Robertson said.

"Against that backdrop it is probably right the Olympics share some of the pain but in a way that will not put at risk the greater good of the project."

Given the overall cost of the Games is 9.3 billion pounds (13.5 billion dollars), a reduction of 27 million pounds is a relatively small sum.
