Felipe Massa, a driver for Ferrari's Formula One team, is in life-threatening but stable condition, doctors at Budapest's Honved Hospital said after the Brazilian came out of surgery, local wire service MTI reported.

Massa suffered injuries during time trials at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Saturday afternoon. He was struck in the head by debris that broke off a car driven by his compatriot, Brawn-Mercedes's Rubens Barrichello, and crashing into the wall. He was taken by helicopter to Honved Hospital.

Hospital director Dr Peter Bazso and Armed Forces Chief Surgeon Lajos Zsiros told a press conference that Massa was brought to the hospital's intensive care unit and went into surgery after one hour of preparation. Massa is currently under anesthesia and on a ventilator, but will be awakened on Sunday.

Honved Hospital spokeswoman Judit Bozi Pacser said an announcement on the condition of the 28-year-old driver will be made on Sunday.
