Introduction
The band that was to be called "Mumiy Troll" was formed in 1985
in Vladivostok (Russian Far-East). Winning over countries and
people began for the band with the release of the album "Morskaya"
("Nautica", 1997). The first to fall for their charm was Russia
from Kaliningrad to Nakhodka, next to be conquered were Ukraine,
Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. A few years later "Mumiy Troll" was
received with the warmest welcome in Great Britain, Germany,
Greenland, Israel, Israel, Denmark, Sweden, South Africa, China and
Japan. Contemporary Russian music is divided into what was before
and what came after "Mumiy Troll". With their first albums "Mumiy
Troll"started a trend for guitar music and all Russian popular
music turned to guitars following the early works of the band.
"Mumiy Troll"s later work softened the traditional Russian sharp
divide between pop and rock music. The frontman and creator of the
band, Ilia Lagutenko, defined this new style as "rockapops". Once
again "Mumiy Troll" became the leader of an entire new musical
trend. "Mumiy Troll" changed not only the music but also the
clothes, hairstyles and behaviour of Russian young people. Ilia
became the person who brought fashion trends into the everyday life
of young Russians. The fringe à la Lagutenko, soft "meowing"
intonations, the smile people attributed a special meaning to –
these features of one man were adopted by an entire generation.
"Mumiy Troll" is a welcome guest at all rock and pop festivals of
Russia and ex-Soviet republics. In 2001 the rock band "Mumiy Troll"
went the "Eurovision" pop music contest. The confused event
organizers were offered a compromise: to define MT style as
medium-rock. The songs and music of "Mumiy Troll" are present in
Russian film soundtracks, including the second part of "Nochnoy
Dozor", where Ilia Lagutenko played the role of a vampire
hairdresser. "Mumiy Troll" band support the activities of PSI
organization fighting AIDS and WWF activities for the protection of
animals. Ilia Lagutenko is a patron of the "Amur" fund for the
protection of Amur tigers and leopards. Ilia Lagutenko's talent,
irreproachable taste and constant working to create something new
allow him to be at the origin of contemporary cultural development
trends in the country. It also allows the "Mumiy Troll" band to be
one of the most interesting features of the musical and social life
of modern-day Russia. "Mumiy Troll" new album "AMBA" will release
in the summer 2007.
