The 253-kilometer Lhasa-Xigaze Railway, which will start operating in 2014, is expected to improve transportation in the southwestern part of Tibet. The railway is an extended part of the Qinghai-Tibet railway, the world's highest and longest plateau railway connecting Xining, capital of Northwest China's Qinghai province and Lhasa in Tibet.
