The word "tattoo" comes from the Tahitian word "tatu". Discovered in the 18th century by European explorers, the Polynesian practice first became popular among Western sailors, who dubbed their body art "tattoos."

Today, tattoos remain prevalent among African aboriginals and Pacific islanders. But they have also found a new canvas: professional athletes.

From Beckham's guardian angel to Wayne Rooney's cross, the European football leagues and World Cup have introduced tattoos to a generation of Chinese sports fans. But many fans might be surprised to learn many Chinese footballers have also begun to sport ink.

China.org.cn brings you the top 10 tattooed Chinese football players.
