Chan Yui-chong and Yu Choi-yee clinched two golds for Hong Kong SAR at the Fencing Hall on Tuesday.
World champion Yu clashed with Zhang Chuncui of China for the Women's Foil category A gold medal, just a day after Zhang beat Yu in the Epee final. This time it was Yu who triumphed, taking the honors with a hard earned 15-13 victory.
The Hong Kong star was surprised to lose her Paralympic Epee crown on Monday, but she looked composed as she stepped up to defend her Athens 2004 Foil title.
Zhang took an early lead in Tuesday's battle, going ahead 10-5. Yu remained focused and clawed her way back into the bout with four consecutive hits. Zhang then went 12-9 ahead, but didn't appear as confident as she had in the Epee final, this time playing more cautiously.
Yu's defensive action and ripostes were superb and she scored the next four hits to lead 13-12. Zhang tied the scores once more, but Yu had the momentum and took full advantage, ending the bout with two perfect hits.
The bronze medal went to Yu's teammate Fan Pui-shan, who beat Sabrina Poignet of France 15-12. This is Fan's second bronze at Beijing 2008, as on Monday she clinched third place in the Epee (category A).
In the Women's Epee category B, Chan Yui-chong of Hong Kong SAR beat Yao Fang of China 15-12 for the gold medal. This means double golds for Chan, who on Monday defeated Yao in the Foil category B final. Chan won gold in Athens 2004 for Foil and silver for Epee.
Chan suffered a scare earlier in the day when she lost to Jana Sayasunee of Thailand in the pool stage. Later, the two clashed in the semifinal and it was Chan who triumphed. Sayasunee won the bronze medal, as she did in Athens 2004, with a 15-8 win over Russia's Liudmila Vasilyeva.
