The three-time world champion clocked four minutes and 15.031 seconds to break the Games' record of 4:15.165, set by himself at Athens four years ago.

With Wiggins topping the table, eight cyclists qualified for Saturday's first round. Hayden Roulston of New Zealand got second place in 4:18.990, while Alexei Markov of Russia placed third in 4:21.498.

The men's individual pursuit first round and finals will be held at 17:25 and 18:50 respectively on Aug. 16.
