A household name for his outstanding stage and screen performances and his commitment to China's anti-HIV/AIDS campaign, actor Pu Cunxin has applied to become a volunteer for both Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

Actor Pu Cunxin receives volunteer training textbooks.

"I will give up all performance appointments during my volunteer services for the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympic Games," he told the journalists on the scene.

On Thursday Pu went through the application procedure at the Beijing Volunteer Association and received a letter of appointment to train volunteers for the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics.

"I can recite Pierre de Coubertin's Ode to Sport for the volunteers and go on line to solicit scripts and create art works that can inspire the volunteers," he said.

Asked why he is so determined to be a Games-time volunteer, Pu said he was a disabled person when he was young. "I suffered from polio before the age of nine and since then I have felt a strong sympathy for people who are affected with a handicap. I want to see more people involved in the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games through my personal efforts," he said.
