The Central Chinese city of Wuhan is to bring into effect criteria to help regulate the city's environment protection and sanitation work.

A pilot run of the criteria is scheduled to begin on September 1st with regular operations expected to commence next year, the local Changjiang Daily reports.

According to the criteria, the roads in the city will be divided into four categories to meet different sanitation standards.

The strictest measures will be adopted on the main arterials where not more than two stains or waste articles should be found within 1,000 square meters and the cleaning work must be completed within 20 minutes.

The dustbins on the side of the first-class roads should be cleaned twice a day and each worker should cover an area of around 6,000 square meters, the report said.

It also stipulates that toilets near the arterial roads and main public transportation depots should be free, open around the clock with cleaned regularly.

Cleaners are also required to be quiet when collecting rubbish in and around residential communities.
