Nine prisoners were killed during a riot at a prison in northern Honduras Saturday, according to news from Tegucigalpa.

The inmates were killed with knives and machetes at the penitentiary in San Pedro Sula, which is Honduras' manufacturing center, local police said.

The riot is believed to have started after a prisoner shot and killed a fellow inmate.

Police eventually brought the brawl under control.

Around 30 prisoners involved in the incident will be transferred to different prisons, police said.
