The Tanzanian government on Sunday named a new stadium, built by a Chinese contractor with financing from the governments of both Tanzania and China, as the Main National Stadium.
The 56.4-million-US dollar stadium was inaugurated on Sunday by visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao and Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.
China contributed 33.4 million dollars to the construction of the stadium, while Tanzania footed the remaining funds of the bill.
The 60,000-seat ultra-modern stadium is not only the biggest in Tanzania but also the only one with a super lighting and super screen display system.
Tanzania's previous national stadium has been renamed as the Uhuru (Independence) Stadium.
