A British patient infected with A/ H1N1 flu has died in hospital, the Scottish government said on Sunday. This is the first death linked to the once-called swine flu in Britain so far.

The decedent was one of 10 patients who were treated in hospital in the greater Glasgow area.

"With regret, we can confirm that one of the patients who had been in hospital, and had been confirmed as suffering from the H1N1 virus, has died today," said a statement from the Scottish Government.

With the family's request, no further details will be released and the hospital where the patient died has not been revealed yet.

Britain's Department of Health confirmed on Friday 104 new cases of A/H1N1 flu infections, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 1,226.

The Department of Health statement said 61 confirmed cases were from England and 43 from Scotland.

"The localized cases of swine flu found in the UK have so far been generally mild in most people, but are proving to be severe in a small minority of cases. We are continuing to work to slow the spread of the disease and to put in place arrangements to ensure that the UK is well-placed to deal with this new infection, " said a statement from the Department of Health.
