Last Friday, Shanghai Municipal Administration of Sport released
a report on Shanghai people's physical conditions, based on the 2nd
National Physical Conditions Report by the State Administration of
Sport of China. Shanghai people's physical conditions index is
106.24, the highest, while the average figure is 100.75
nationwide.
Compared with 2000, 3.3% more Shanghai people go in for regular
exercises nowadays, especially senior citizens, about 40% of whom
take exercises 4 to 5 times a week, while many young people do
physical exercises out once or twice in a week. Many senior
citizens have kept the good habit for more than 5 years, which is
an impressive figure. That well explains why 93.1% of senior
Shanghai people are in good physical condition, 18.9% higher than
the national figure, and 49.5% of them are even in “excellent”
condition.
However, male Shanghai people's physical conditions brings more
worries than joys, for 36.8% of them are overweighted, 2.9% higher
than the figure in 2000, and many of them suffer from hypertension,
diabetes, high blood fat, etc.
Though Shanghai people's physical conditions are generally
satisfactory, it still requires time and effort to encourage people
there to take part in sports, which will guarantee them a healthier
and happier future, especially in the hustle and bustle of a
metropolis.
