Periscopes will be installed at every manhole cover around Shanghai Stadium in Xuhui District to ensure safety during next month's Olympic soccer matches, Oriental Morning Post reported today.
The equipment was purchased recently and the periscopes can show cracked or blocked pipes ranging from 150 to 1,500 millimeters in diameter. With a powerful searchlight, each periscope is able to reach as deep as 30 meters, the report said.
Old manhole covers were replaced to avoid subsiding in order to improve the smoothness of the surface of Zhongshan No. 2 Road S. from Wanping Road to Tianyaoqiao Road, the report said.
Meanwhile, only company employees can be admitted to construction sites in Xuhui and should register when they come and go every day, the newspaper said.
Sites that will continue to build during Olympic soccer games are supposed to sign a safety administration agreement. They are banned from doing anything dangerous including using explosives during matches, the report said.
