Severe tropical storm Kalmaegi made landfall in the coastal area of east China's Fujian Province on Friday evening, the provincial meteorological station said.

The storm landed in Changchun Township, Xiapu County, at 6:10 p.m. with winds of up to 90 km per hour, the station said.

Kalmaegi had killed at least six people in Taiwan after making landfall in the northeast coast of the island late on Thursday when it was a typhoon.

From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, 11 counties or cities in Fujian reported precipitation of 50 mm to 100 mm.

The provincial educational department also issued a notice on Friday ordering school classes halted during the storm period. It was forecast to continue moving northwestward.

Neighboring Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces and Shanghai were also warning of rainstorms and strong gales brought by the storm.

Fujian and Zhejiang evacuated 360,000 people and called 61,000 fishing vessels back to harbor ahead of the storm's landfall.
