An African zebra gave birth to a male cub on Wednesday at a plateau safari park in northwest China's Qinghai province.

Liu Chuanhui, spokeswoman for the Qinghai Plateau Safari Park, said it was really difficult for the tropical animal from the African veld to be able to accommodate the harsh plateau environment and conceive naturally.

Zebra breeder Zhang Jinsheng added the cub is healthy, and escorted closely by his mother.

Before the labor, the mother and her partner were taken into a heated stable, where the three-year-and-10-month-old female was fed with forage mixed with carrot, according to Zhang.

The pair were introduced to the Qinghai Plateau Safari Park in 2007.

Situated over 2,390 meters above the sea level, the park is located to the west of the provincial capital of Xi'ning. More than 180 varieties of wild animals roam freely in its 100 hectares of forest and grassland.
