The new Moscow mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, has banned the use of chemical reagents for tackling ice-slick near the residential areas in winter, local media reported on Wednesday.

According to the decree signed by the mayor, no chemical deicers will be used at bus stops, sidewalks, green parks and residential blocks as of this winter, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

In residential areas, granite macadams will be laid to prevent ice-related accidents, an official source from the city administration said.

For years Moscow residents have complained about the use of chemical deicers which is believed harmful to footwear and health.
