Mexico to cut CO2 emissions by 50 mln tons by 2012

Mexican President Felipe Calderon announced on Thursday that his country will reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 50 million tons by the end of 2012, thus becoming the first developing country to achieve this goal.
Calderon made the announcement at a ceremony held at the National Palace.
The president said that this was a goal established in the national program against climate change.
He added that in 2006, Mexico only had two megawatts of eolian energy, and now the energy produced by the wind is 520 megawatts.
Five wind farms are now being built in Mexico, which would help reduce almost 20 million tons of CO2 emissions in the future, he said.
Mexico is to host the next UN climate change conference in Cancun from Nov. 29 to Dec. 10 this year.
